- The community of Chocantariy is located in the highlands of Guatemala at 2500 meters, about 5 km from the center of Momostenango. It houses about 300 families.
- There are no markets or large stores around.
- Most of the people work as farmers or blanket weavers (Momostenango is very famous for their traditional blankets.) Their income is very low and some of them, who have big families, can hardly cover their basic needs.
- Due to the above circumstances, a group of women from the village came together and formed an association to improve the situation.
- To reach their goal, they opened a small bakery with a little grocery in the village and offer fresh bread to the community. They also started a 100% free nursery to take care of the young children of working parents and a kindergarten to offer free preschool education.
- In doing so, they offer work opportunities to women, which will raise their social status in a male-dominated society. They also set an example for others to participate in social development activities. At the same time, children of the nursery receive pre-school education, escape from early child labor and receive balanced meals to enforce their immune system.
- Future Plan: A library where students can read and do investigation for their study.
