Scholarship Program

The CasaSito scholarship program focuses on indigenous junior high and high school students of the Sacatepéquez area who have good grades, but are unable to continue their studies due to their economic circumstances. With this program, students may choose their school career as long as their choices are within our budget and their family financial situation.

  • CasaSito started the scholarship program in 2007, and currently we have 45 scholars studying in 8 different "career" paths.
  • The application process starts in November, the end of the school year in Guatemala, which includes an analysis of their report card, a family visit, and in-depth interview. The qualifying students are then interviewed by the Scholarship Committee which is formed by local volunteers from different professions.
  • The chosen scholars receive $10-$100 per month to cover part of their tuition, school materials, food, and/or transportation with an extra amount to cover registration and materials in January, the beginning of the school year.
  • During the school year, our  local coordinators monitor progress and outcomes regularly.  Through meetings, family visits and communication with the schools, we keep track of the attendance and performance of each scholar. These meetings also serve to ensure that the students maintain their commitment to their family life, which we have  identified as an important issue.
  • Bi-annual evaluation meetings are organized and reports are sent out to the donors. For those who fail to reach our standard grade of above 70%, have poor attendance, or behave badly in school or at home will lose the scholarship.

Extracurricular personal development:

  • CasaSito offers counselor support to students, families and teachers. Topics of social important are presented and discussed in workshops, meetings and talks. CasaSito believes firmly that education is not only within the walls of the school, but it is necessary to work with families, teachers and students in a way that is directed to his/her psychological, social and affective needs.
